For most of us our lawn is the single largest landscaping project that we will ever attempt. The lawn has been described as the "picture frame" for the house. A good lawn isn't hard to grow, if you stick to the basics. The basics are Grass Seed, Fertilizer and Problem Solvers and the Lawn Products section of this website describes all three and their product offerings.

It all begins by selecting the highest quality Grass Seed mixture, one which is well suited to the environment it will be grown in. Keep in mind that the lawn you plant, can never be better than the grass seed varieties it was grown from. Over the past twenty-five years there have been major advancements in turfgrass breeding. The improved grass seed varieties I use in my Jonathan Green Grass Seed Mixtures are more drought tolerant, disease and insect resistant and naturally darker green in color than any other turf grasses, which have previously been available. My new Black Beauty Ultra Grass Seed Mixture, for instance, is just such a seed mixture. It is composed of elite turf-type tall fescue grasses, Kentucky bluegrasses and perennial ryegrasses, some of which possess an invisible waxy cuticle coating, much like the wax on an apple, which causes it to shine when you polish it on your sleeve. This waxy cuticle preserves the moisture in the leaf by lowering the evapo-transpiration rate of these grasses, making them more drought tolerant than any other grass seed varieties on the market today. Most of my grass seed mixtures also contain beneficial endophytes. These naturally-occurring organisms, live off the grass plant host. The endophytes produce defensive chemicals called alkaloids, which are toxic to many insects, such as, chinch bugs, sod webworms, cutworms, aphids, chafers and Japanese beetles. Endophytes are all natural and do not diminish over time. Endophytes reduce the need for pesticide treatments on your lawn.

The second important point to consider in the care of your lawn is Fertilizer. Lawns need to receive a steady supply of food, metered out over weeks or months. It is stressful on the plant, and potentially destructive, too alternatively over feed and then starve your lawn. The third product category, which is vital in a balanced approach to Lawn Care, is named the, Problem Solvers. The proper use and timing of these products is important. For instance, Jonathan Green Lawn Fungus Control is most cost effective if applied before an out break of turf disease. Pest Kill White Grub control insecticide provides a quick-kill when used on grubs soon after they hatch in August. My Lawn Weed Control is great to use when you don't need to fertilize. Finally my newest product release may be the best of all. I've named it, MAG-I-CAL, because it is a truly magical problem solver! This enhanced pelletized water soluble calcium, will rapidly raise soil pH providing a better growing environment for the desirable grasses in your lawn. These grasses like neutral soil, while weeds proliferate in acidic soils. Both the broad leaf weeds (dandelion) and grassy weeds (crabgrass) are easier to eliminate if your lawn has a pH of 6.0 or higher. Fortunately my MAG-I-CAL is the equivalent in neutralizing capacity to ten bags of pelletized limestone! This means that you can now substantially improve your lawns pH, at a lower cost, than in the past and you won't have to lug home a lot of bags to do so.
